Mounted bearings and housings

Mounted bearings and housings with rolling bearings support a rotating shaft, which can be bolted on a machine frame or any other substructure. There is no need to precisely machine a bearing housing in a surrounding casing. This makes these solutions cost-efficient and easy to use, while providing full rolling bearing performance.

Ball bearing units

Because of their versatility and cost-effectiveness, ball bearing units are typically used in many industrial applications.

Ball bearing units consist of an insert bearing mounted in a housing. An insert bearing is a deep groove ball bearing with a sphered (convex) outside surface and an extended inner ring that includes a mechanism to lock the unit onto the shaft. The housings have a correspondingly sphered but concave bore.

The SKF assortment offers a wide variety of units with different housing shapes and bearings using different locking methods. It includes units to ISO standards, North American standards, and Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). Ball bearing units can accommodate moderate initial misalignment, but normally do not permit axial displacement.

Pillow block ball bearing units

SKF pillow (plummer) block ball bearing units consist of an insert bearing mounted in a housing, which can be bolted to a support surface. The SKF assortment includes units compliant with ISO standards, North American standards, or Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). Within the SKF assortment, you can find units for nearly all requirements.

In addition, SKF Food Line ball bearing units provide hygienic and high-performance bearing unit solutions for the most demanding food and beverage environments.

Flanged ball bearing units

SKF flanged ball bearing units consist of an insert bearing mounted in a housing, which can be bolted to a machine wall or frame. The SKF assortment includes units compliant with ISO standards, North American standards, or Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). Within the SKF assortment, you can find units for nearly all requirements regarding bolt patterns or locking on the shaft.

In addition, SKF Food Line ball bearing units provide hygienic and high-performance bearing unit solutions for the most demanding food and beverage environments.

Take-up ball bearing units

SKF take-up ball bearing units consist of an insert bearing and a housing, and are compliant with ISO standards, North American standards, and Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS), as required by many industrial applications. In contrast, take-up units for the SKF Food Line are not compliant with these standards and are therefore considered as not standardized.

The SKF take-up ball bearing unit assortment comprises insert bearing series and designs, with the main differences between the take-up units being the housing design, the locking method onto the shaft, the sealing solution, and the options for end covers and back seals. Explore the variety of take-up units and possible combinations available in the product details below.

Take-up units are typically mounted in take-up frames and are connected by an adjustment screw.

Ball bearing units with composite housings

Reduce total cost of ownership with SKF composite housings

SKF ball bearing units with a composite housing are part of SKF’s extensive line of cost-effective mounted products. These lightweight, ready-to-mount units are particularly well-suited for applications with relatively high speeds, moderate loads, and where reliability and minimal maintenance are key factors.

A superior housing

SKF composite housings are made of a glass fibre reinforced polyamide material (PA6). These lightweight housings resist a variety of chemicals and diluted acids.

The highlights of these housings are:

  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • Tolerant of high and low temperatures
  • lightweight
  • Fimensionally interchangeable with cast iron units
  • Excellent UV resistance
  • Paintable
  • Recyclable
  • Available with end covers

Relubrication-free units

The sealed insert bearing is pre-lubricated for the life of the bearing with a lithium/calcium base grease. This long lasting, water-resistant grease combined with the highly effective integral seals and high performance design of appropriately selected SKF ball bearing units can provide long, reliable service life without the costs and environmental issues of relubrication.

Sealing solutions, bearing designs and materials

Assembled, ready-to-mount SKF ball bearing units with a composite housing are available as standard with different insert bearing designs, with different sealing solutions. For an overview of the available unit series with a composite housing, refer to the following:

  • Pillow block units to ISO standards
  • Square and oval flanged units to ISO standards

SKF composite housings can be assembled with all appropriately sized SKF insert bearings. This includes all locking methods, all material options (e.g. zinc-coated rings and stainless steel bearings) and all sealing options.

Ball bearing units for high temperature applications

SKF ball bearing units for high temperature applications offer solutions for operating temperatures above 250 °C (480 °F) up to 350 °C (660 °F). They incorporate graphite-based lubrication solutions and have a large internal clearance, which avoids seizing, even when they cool rapidly. Table 1 provides a quick overview of high temperature variants. For detailed information, refer to Insert bearings and ball bearing units for high temperature applications.

Dimensions and performance data are provided in the data tables:

  • Insert bearings for high temperature applications, with grub screws
  • Ball bearing plummer block units for high temperature applications
  • Ball bearing square flanged units for high temperature applications
  • Ball bearing oval flanged units for high temperature applications
